Case 03/04. Caesar ↔ E2E

Цезарь ↔ E2E

Art

Artist
A history of ciphers
Work
Caesar → Alberti's disk → Vigenère → Enigma → Fialka → one-time pad → end-to-end encryption
Year
1st century BC to today

Caesar shifted letters by three. Alberti invented a cipher disk in 1467. Vigenère made the key a word. Enigma and the Soviet Fialka turned rotors. Shannon proved the one-time pad unbreakable.

Code

modern cryptography

End-to-end encryption descends from all these machines: the key lives only on your devices.

Action

Decrypt today's word with the key from your passport.

Расшифруйте слово дня ключом из паспорта.

The label in the room

The same hash is printed at the foot of the label. If they match, nobody changed the text.

Two thousand years of ciphers, from Caesar's shift to a key that lives only in your phone. Without the key it is noise, with it — text. Decrypt today's word with your passport key.

Две тысячи лет шифров: от сдвига Цезаря до ключа, который живёт только в вашем телефоне. Без ключа шифр — мусор, с ключом — текст. Расшифруйте слово дня ключом из паспорта.

In the room

A long timeline panel; the cipher-of-the-day insert; a photo of Fialka by arrangement with the Museum of Cryptography
