Room 04 · error, noise, chance

Room 04. What if it breaks?

Что, если сломается?

Chance makes art alive and keys strong. An error can be glitch art or a vulnerability: it depends on who finds it.

Pairs in this room

  1. 04/01 1 % disorder ↔ lava lamp

    Vera Molnár, 1970s

Molnár added one percent of chance to a strict grid. Chance protects keys too: Cloudflare makes them from lava lamp video. Let a password manager invent your passwords.

  2. 04/02 Virus museum ↔ virus

Mikko Hyppönen, Internet Archive; Guo O Dong, 2016; 2019

Old viruses drew pictures on the screen; now they hang in a museum. Today's silently encrypt your files and ask for ransom. Turn on automatic system updates.

  3. 04/03 Glitch ↔ vulnerability

Rosa Menkman; Cory Arcangel, 2010; 2002

Artists turn errors into art. Attackers turn them into lock picks: in 2014 Heartbleed opened server memory. Install updates the day they arrive.

  4. 04/04 Tetris ↔ hacker

Chaos Computer Club; Alexey Pajitnov; the demoscene, 2001; 1984; since the 1980s

Hackers turn buildings into screens and graphics-free computers into Tetris. A hacker is first a maker who learns how things work. Write your first line of code today.

A glitch that works

Every QR code in this exhibition is damaged, up to a quarter of its modules. It still works: the code carries redundancy and can lose 30 %. That is how resilience works, in QR codes and on the internet.
